Grand Theatre of Pompeii: Reopening

Almost 2,000 years after being swallowed by Vesuvian ash, the Grand Theatre of Pompeii will come back to life hosting performances once again, a regional official told ANSA on Tuesday. Speaking on the sidelines of a culture forum hosted by ANSA, Campania Culture Assessor Caterina Miraglia said theatrical productions inside the second-century BC amphitheatre will commence in July with a performance of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon.

Built according to traditional Greek style, the Grand Theatre of Pompeii had a capacity of about 5,000 spectators, with tiered seating that makes use of a natural slope and an orchestra arranged in the form of a horseshoe. It underwent various renovations before the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, which buried the Ancient Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, killing about 2,000 people.

Through excavated artifacts, multimedia experiences, and hands-on science exhibits, guests will learn the science of archaeology, volcanology, and Roman engineering while exploring the ancient civilization of Pompeii.
