Curiosity

During the Christmas holidays in the heart of the city are also organized traditional markets scattered around the city streets and magnificent live nativity in Piazza San Gaetano while in the church of San Lorenzo Maggiore you can see microscopic cribs contained in the shells of nuts.

All foreign visitors are surprised when they visit Naples in the holidays: the downtown streets, those of the markets and craft shops are so crowded during the Christmas holidays that it’s almost impossible to walk, to the point that enter into force on the direction of travel for pedestrians!

Lupanar (Pompeii)

The Lupanar of Pompeii is the most famous brothel in the ruined Roman city of Pompeii. It is of particular interest for the erotic paintings on its walls. Lupanar is Latin for “brothel”. The Pompeii lupanar is also known as Lupanare Grande.

Early Pompeian excavators, guided by the strict modesty of the time period, quickly classified any building containing erotic paintings as brothels. Using this metric, Pompeii had 35 lupanares. Given a population of ten thousand in Pompeii during the first century CE, this leaves one brothel per 286 people or 71 adult males. Using a stricter standard for identifying brothels brings the number to a more realistic figure including nine single room establishments and the Lupanar at VII, 12, 18-20.

The bed and breakfast Pompei IL FAUNOis just 1 Km from the main entrance of the excavations of Pompeii and just 500 metres from the Circumvesuviana train, from which you can reach in few minutes the other archaeological sites: Ercolano, Oplonti, Stabia and the Antiquarium of Boscoreale! The garden of fugitives is waiting for you!

Brothels during this period were typically small with only a few rooms. The Lupanar was the largest of the brothels found in Pompeii with 10 rooms. Like other brothels, rooms in the Lupanar were plainly furnished. A mattress on a brick platform served as a bed.

Graffiti

There have been 134 graffiti transcribed from the Lupanar at Pompeii. The presence of this graffiti served as one of the criteria for identifying the building as a brothel.

Examples of graffiti from the Lupanar include:

  • Hic ego puellas multas futui (“Here I fucked many girls”).
  • Felix bene futuis (“Lucky guy, you fuck well,” a prostitute’s blandishment to her client, or “Lucky guy, you get a good fuck”).

Other examples can be traced to other locations in Pompeii. Given that persons of wealth generally did not visit brothels because of the availability of mistresses or slave concubines, the names can not be connected to known historical figures. The graffiti do tell stories, however. Various authors respond to each other’s carvings in a sort of dialogue.

Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii

Vesuvius is the Earth’s most famous volcano

Vesuvius is the Earth’s most famous volcano, one of the most studied and is also one of the most dangerous since the vast territory that extends to its slopes has seen the construction of houses up to 700 meters of altitude. It is a typical example of fence volcano consists of a trunk, the outer cone Mount Somma (1133 metres), with the crater walls largely demolished within which lies a smaller cone represented by Vesuvius (1281 m), separated by a Valley named Valle del Gigante, part of the ancient caldera, where afterwards, presumably during the eruption of 79 a.d., it formed a Large cone or Vesuvio. Giant Valley is divided in turn into the atrium of the horse in the West and Valle dell’inferno East.
The fence of the sum is well preserved throughout its northern part, in fact it was in historic times less exposed to the devastating fury of the volcano, because fixed height of inner wall that prevented the flow of lava on its slopes. The slopes, variously degrading are furrowed by deep valleys radial produced by rainwater erosion.

Its walls from Mount Sommaparte at cone peak. The whole section is then scattered with spikes and dikes of dark volcanic rock. Monte SommaThe old crater rim is a succession of peaks called cognoli. While the height of the Sum and its profile are kept equal, height and outline of Vesuvius have undergone substantial changes, because of subsequent eruptions, with promotions and demotions. Vesuvius is a volcano poligenico and mixed characteristic, i.e. made up of lavas of different chemical composition (e.g. tefriti, leucititi, trachytes) and formed by lava flows and pyroclastic deposits. All areas on the slopes of the mountain are formed by land transported by mud lava flowing down steep slopes by rainy seasons through narrow valleys and deep river beds or more commonly called Lakes. The high embankments were formed from lava, slag heaps that precipitates glowing State and spread toward the lower slopes, are revealed now because of their fertile material, silicon and potassium-rich, valuable to the vegetation. In colder weather the condensation of vapour discloses the fumaroles are present in numerous parts of the inner wall of the crater. Continuing along the rim of this crater, looking towards the sea captures the entire extension of the southern part of the volcano and, on days with good visibility, the entire Gulf of Naples Sorrento peninsula and Capri to Capo Miseno, Procida and Ischia. It is unavoidable to note also the reckless urban expansion stretching back along the slopes of the volcano.
