FAQs on the tour guided Pompeii Ruins:

What will i see on the tour?

You will definitely be seeing the highlights of the ancient town, such as the Forum, the main temples, the famous houses but also simple though important elements that represent daily life like the baths, theatres and why not bars, bakeries and restaurants.
However, being a private tour, each one is customized at the moment according to your interests, studies or curiosities.

How long does a tour last?

The length of a tour can be found in each description on the homepage.
Nonetheless time is not important to me unless you have a specific travel schedule.
I don’t fit consecutive tours on my agenda so no tour is done in a rush.

What if i am late or have any problem in reaching you?

Well, first of all please call me at the emergency number that will be given to you at the moment of the reservation. According on how late you are we will evaluate at the moment. Little delays may not represent a problem but in case you delay is pretty consistent a penalty fee may apply.
As per cancellation policy, a 100% penalty will be applied for cancellations forwarded 48 hours before the tour time and date or in case of NO SHOW.
Nonetheless, still try to contact me and we will mutually try to find a solution if possible.

What if weather is bad?

Rarely a visit of Pompeii can be compromised by weather conditions.
However in case of extreme weather conditions that may not allow a comprehensive and satisfactory visit or especially for safety reasons a 100% refund will be given back.

Where do i meet you?

The meeting point can be agreed at the moment of the reservation.
I’ll be holding a board with your name at the agreed spot (at one of Pompeii Entrances or at one of the stations if you are travelling by train).

How much are the entrance tickets?

The entrance ticket costs €15.00 per person.
Free of charge for kids under 18 years old (do not forget to carry their passport or ID with you).

No, it’s not possible to carry any bag that exceeds cm 30x30x15.
Visitors can leave their luggage at the free storage at the entrance.

What do i have to bring?

Also, as Pompeii can be very hot especially in summer I would definitely suggest you a hat, sunscreen and plenty water. Though there are many public fountains and a Cafè in the site.

Herculaneum – Buried Stories – August to November 2013

Ruins of Herculaneum Fascinating evenings encompassing archaeology theatre, virtual reality and light paths

The Route

The journey begins with the virtual story – told through 3D images – of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and continues with a guided tour by an archaeologist.

The walk, in addition to offering an extraordinary view of the site from above, leads to the Padiglione della Barca (Boat Pavilion), specially open for this event, where this extraordinary find is shown and others connected to maritime activities.

The descent continues to the Roman city, following a path of light and sound, to the arches where a timeless character gives a striking theatrical performance, sharing his thoughts on the ephemeral existence of humans, tracing the “buried” stories of men, women, the old and the young up to the unexpected catastrophe, thus offering the spectator a “special” point of view about the value of existence.

“How you get lost easily in the small and trivial issues of everyday life, unnecessary quarrels, losing sight of the profound value of existence!”

The bed and breakfast Pompei “IL FAUNO” is just 18 Km from the entrance of the excavations of Herculaneum and just 500 metres from the Circumvesuviana train, from which you can reach in few minutes the other archaeological sites: Pompeii, Oplonti, Stabia and the Antiquarium of Boscoreale!

L’antica marina e i fornici sulla spiaggia di Ercolano
The ancient marina and the arches on the beach of Herculaneum

In 79 AD, a glowing cloud of gas and ash with a temperature of 400° rolled down the slopes of Mount Vesuvius to attack Herculaneum. The few victims found within the city, including a newborn baby in its cradle, indicate that the majority of the inhabitants had already left their homes, resorting to the sea as an escape route. When the surge reached the beach area, three hundred evacuees died instantly of thermal shock, who had taken refuge in the shelters for boat (arches), which opened on it. A boat, m 9 in length, was found capsized next to the victims.

History of the excavations of Herculaneum

History of the excavations of Herculaneum

The digs began at Herculaneum in 1738, and continued using the technique of underground tunnels and exploratory and ventilation shafts until 1828, when the “open-air” digs were authorized, and carried out until 1875. After a very long interruption, in 1927 Amedeo Maiuri began again the work , and continued to lead the digs until 1958, but already in 1942 about all the area, constituting the current archaeological park, was brought to light and contemporary restored and covered.

Additional work was done between 1960 and 1969, in the northern sector of Insula VI and along the main street or “Decumanus Maximus”, while the last twenty years have concentrated on exploring the ancient shoreline, corresponding to the southern most strip of the archeological area.

The Excavation of Erculaneum is far from our bed and breakfast only 18 Km.

In this area 12 rooms were brought to light. These were rooms (fornici) with arched entrances, shelters for boats and warehouse, where many people took refuge escaping from the eruption. In this area it was found the wooden boat, now placed in a pavilion adjacent to the modern offices of the Soprintendenza and the Antiquarium, waiting for a complex work of restoration.
In 1991 a program of excavation for bringing to light Villa of Papyri started.
Carlo Weber discovered Villa of Papyri in 1750 by chance. He excavated the Villa through underground tunnels and accurately surveyed it.
The intervention was possible thanks to extraordinary funds allocated on the basis of the 64/1-3-1986 Law. In 1991 following an agreement between the “Ministero per I Beni Culturali e Ambientali” and the “Agenzia per la promozione e lo sviluppo del Mezzogiorno”, the project was given in concession to a Temporary Association (A.T.I.).
The New Excavation was concentrated at the western side of the modern Vico Mare and is connected to the archaeological park through a narrow and deep trench, starting from the House of Aristide and continuing through a gallery beneath Vico Mare.

In reality, only the atrium of the Villa was brought to light, as the remains of the luxurious residence are under some properties not expropriated yet. In the eastern section of the excavations a great building and the southwestern extremity of the city, were brought to light. This part of the city included some houses and a thermal complex with an apsed nympheum.
Because of the collapse of the ancient coastline, after the eruption of 79 A.D., a system of water pump takes continuously control of the water layer.
